Steffen Varwig introduces BEUMER Group at the "Careers in Physics" seminar

What do I actually enter as my profession in my insurance questionnaire?

As a physicist, you have a wide range of career options after graduation. The career path is often not straightforward. This was the case for me, Steffen Varwig, who graduated from TU Dortmund University after completing his diploma and doctorate at the Chair of Experimental Physics 2 under Manfred Bayer.
After my first position in industry as a lighting technology developer at HELLA in Lippstadt, I moved into a completely different sector and job: product management at tyntec, a provider of a telecommunications communication platform based in Dortmund.
For the last 4 years, however, I have been working for the machine and plant manufacturer BEUMER in Beckum. Initially as a project manager in Research & Development and now as Head of Data & Diagnostic Models in the Group's customer support department. Here I am responsible for evaluating the data that we collect on a wide variety of machines in order to prevent downtime, minimize downtime or help operators get more out of the systems.
All of the stations were very different and had little to do with the quantum dots that I studied in my research at university. However, what all jobs have in common is the need for an innovative mindset, problem-solving skills, a broad technical understanding and the courage to take unknown paths, even if failure is easy - the "frustration tolerance" that is well trained in the laser laboratory.
I would like to talk about this and show what is possible with a physics degree in the BEUMER GROUP, but actually in the whole industry.

About my employer:
Conveying, loading, palletizing, packing, sorting and distributing - the BEUMER GROUP develops and produces technically leading intralogistics systems for the global market. Our employees are characterized by excellent know-how and a strong will to consistently develop themselves further. We do our utmost to promote this aspiration: within the framework of a family atmosphere characterized by a high level of mutual respect and a culture of trust that creates stability and security.
